Fundraiser Dinner!

Hi Philly-area Tigers,

My name is Laura Boyce, and I'm a high school teacher who's been working in Philadelphia schools since I graduated from Princeton in 2007. I currently work in North Philly at Simon Gratz Mastery Charter, a large, inner-city high school that was converted from a traditional neighborhood public school into a charter school just over a year ago. Our students are almost all low-income and African American, and the neighborhood around the school is one of the poorest and most violent in the city. However, the school is making great gains; in just one school year, our state test scores doubled, we were taken off the state's persistently dangerous schools list, and our percentage of students gaining college acceptance tripled.

This year I have helped start a freshman honors program in our 360-student 9th grade academy. Our honors program, which is application-only and serves about 65 freshmen, offers more rigorous courses, leadership development, monthly field trips (this weekend we're visiting Princeton for a lecture, campus tour, and Princeton vs. Penn football game - go Tigers!), and additional privileges and projects. We hope to take students on a multi-day overnight college tour over spring break of this year to tour liberal arts colleges and public research universities across the Northeast. It is our hope that the additional supports, challenges, and opportunities our honors students are offered will prepare them to attend some of the nation's top colleges and universities (including Princeton!) in four years.

To help fund our ambitious spring break trip, we are holding a fundraising dinner and benefit for the honors program on Thursday, November 15th. Our goal is to have more than 100 people attend and raise more than $5,000. All of the details can be found at gratz9.eventbrite.com. I am the point person on this project and am working hard to make it a success.

It would mean a lot to me to have some Philly-area Tigers in attendance at the dinner; we want to really involve the wider Philadelphia community in this project and give people a glimpse of what our kids are capable of. Please consider attending the event on November 15th if you're available. Even if you can't attend, you can donate to support our spring break college trip by clicking here to make a donation; please designate "Gratz 9th Grade Academy" as the recipient on the "Designation" drop-down menu.

Your support would be greatly appreciated by me and my students. Please consider giving - no gift is too small! For $100, you can become a platinum sponsor; your contribution will cover the cost of the spring break college tour for one student. You will receive personalized updates on your sponsored student and postcards and photos from the college tour.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Again, the link to RSVP and get more information is gratz9.eventbrite.com. PLEASE feel free to share this with your networks that might be interested.

Thanks,

Laura Boyce '07

About Erin Donnelly and the Science Cheerleaders:

A representative from Science Cheerleaders will be present to discuss the movie and answer questions regarding young women in advanced science fields. Science Cheerleader was founded by former Philadelphia 76ers cheerleader Darlene Cavalier to get a conversation going, rally the troops, solicit views from all sides and change the tone of science and science policy in this country. The Science Cheerleaders are professional cheerleaders pursuing science careers who playfully challenge stereotypes, turn everyone onto science by encouraging participation in citizen science activities, and inspire young women (including 3-4 million U.S. cheerleaders) to consider careers in science, technology, engineering and math. We do this by recasting the image of scientists and engineers while giving people the opportunity to explore their personal interests as a gateway to science. We communicate in ways that inspire people using our very real, very personal stories. We do this at schools, festivals, malls, on tv, online, at cheer events, games, bars…wherever the people are! The point: science is accessible to ALL! More than 200 current and former professional cheerleaders from the NFL, NBA, and other pro sports leagues, pursing science and engineering careers make up the Science Cheerleaders. Learn more about them here. Thousands of college, high school and middle school cheerleaders–with interests in science and engineering–are poised to join our mission. For more information, please visit www.sciencecheerleader.com.
Erin is a former St. Louis Rams Cheerleader, Captain and 2007 ProBowl representative. She cheered from 2005-2009 while completing a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Bachelor's degree in Biology at Saint Louis University, where she was a Presidential Scholar. During that time, she completed in the 2006 NFL Cheerleader Playoffs on the NFL Network and participated in international military visits to Afghanistan, Qatar, South Korea, and Japan, as well as visits to domestic bases throughout the United States. Erin currently lives in Philadelphia and recently completed the third year of her Doctor of Psychology. She is concurrently working on a Master's degree in Human Sexuality. She is specializing in personality assessment and is working on her dissertation, which examines the relationships between anxiety and sexual dysfunction in dyadic relationships. The Princeton Prize in Race Relations Philadelphia Committee was pleased to recognize Mayra Zavala Zavala from Kennett Square High School as the recipient of the Philadelphia 2012 Princeton Prize in Race Relations. Ms. Zavala has worked tirelessly to bring together disparate community members through the building of a community garden. Her efforts have encouraged community members to see their similarities more than their differences. We were also pleased to award Certificates of Accomplishment to Ms. Aresema Thomas and Mr. Leander Berry for their efforts towards breaking down barriers between racial groups. For this years Awards Ceremony, the Committee was very honored to have as our keynote speaker, Deputy Mayor Richard Negrin (Managing Director of the City of Philadelphia). We loved the strong Princeton community showing at our Awards Ceremony which not only to highlighted and recognized the significance of the efforts undertaken by these three young women and men, but to also show the City of Philadelphia our interest as a Club in being part of the civic dialogue.

Update from the PCOP Community Service Committee:
On January 29th a group of Princeton Alumni and Friends spent a few hours volunteering at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House (PRMH), which is a home-away-from-home for families and their seriously ill children who are being treated at area hospitals.  Our Princeton group prepared and served “Breakfast for Dinner” to the PRMH families as they returned home from long days at the hospital.  After a fun afternoon of making pancakes, scrambling eggs and frying bacon, everyone agreed that the Club should plan to prepare another meal soon.  Thanks to all who participated in and donated to our day at the PRMH and stay tuned for the next volunteer date!

If you would like to make a donation to future PCOP service projects please email the PCOP administrator at RahmanBeckwith03@yahoo.com
